This guy gets everywhere

I went to a Grainne Uaile Museum in Louisburg recently, and saw an 80s irish history video about her. And there he was again. This Guy.

Anyone who’s been through the irish school system and stayed awake for even one irish history video will know this guy. He pops up in more than half of irish history videos as an example of life during the time of [fill in the blank].

Also, its customary to zoom out from him slowly, revealing the rest of the scene, and then to focus on the nobles of bad perspective, and the dog.

Weak

Crytek says that next gen consoles are too weak to run Crysis.

Bernd Diemer, of crytek, says "next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient power" to run crysis properly.

To all those who sounded the death knell of the PC with the arrival of the ‘next gen’ of consoles…

IN YOUR FACE!

We’re saved!

Ok it turns out the rumours of the EA buyout of Crytek were untrue. For now.

False alarm people.

Renamer NG

http://www.albert.nu/programs/renamerng/

This program is absolutely indispensable. I use it every single day. Allows batch renaming of files, with functions allowing you to replace or trim elements, or add numbering.

This is another example of the kind of function which should be built into windows by default, but isnt.

Demos

So much has gone on in my absence!
Demos of Dark Messiah and Just Cause have been released.
PAX happened.
Darkstar One got released.

I’ve only had a chance to play Dark Messiah so far, I’m kind of dreading the just cause demo, but I’m not going to criticise a game (or well, continue to criticise a game) without first playing it.

Except Universal Combat. That game sucks like the vacuum of space.

In fact, in the future I predict that all spacecraft will carry a copy of Universal Combat, as a safety mechanism against hull breach.

But I digress. Dark Messiah. I haven’t even finished the demo, although not for lack of wanting to. I just haven’t had a chance yet. On first impressions, the source engine implementation can feel a bit wooden at some points, but I LOVE the combat system. It just seems so much more dynamic than anything else out there.

The one gripe I have with it so far, is the voice acting. Not that it’s terrible, but its not that great.

Voice acting is something I have a big problem with in games. Its just so often awful. Even my beloved FarCry (PC, not xbox) featured an actor who emphasised every word in the sentence, making him sound like he was constipated and tied to a chair.

I’ll be updating once I try that Just Cause demo. I think at least if I go into it thinking it might suck, I could be pleasantly surprised?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

EA are trying to buy crytek.

I feel so strongly about this I’ve gone and created a petition on petitiononline.com

I usually hate these things, but in this case, what else can one do?

Portal might not be too bad afterall

Looks like old man murray writers Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw are working on Portal for valve.

I guess that means its a bit more tongue in cheek than halflife was. This is a good thing of course.

Official Playstation Magazine Editor doesn’t want a PS3

HAH! This is classic stuff. Dana Jongewaard, the editor of the OFFICIAL PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE thinks the PS3 is too expensive, and blu-ray’s just not important enough.

her blog

doesn’t explain why she’s waiting till the PS3 release date to buy a 360 though.

Attack of the Jack

Just saw the G4 / Jack Thompson interview about Rockstar’s new title, bully over on YouTube, and I have to say, as much as I hate the guy he came across rather well.

There was a lot of shouting going on alright, but most of it was coming from G4’s own Adam Sessler. He was yelling and shouting over jack like a spoiled teenager fighting with his parents, and despite the fact that JT was outnumbered 3-1 by people who disagreed with him, the fact that he was mostly calm and collected made him seem like the normal one in a bunch of jabbering idiots.

I worry. I really do. I mean, if Jack Thompson can go on a computer games channel, attacking games, making outlandish statements like "I predicted columbine" and claiming that doom could somehow be used to train children in the use of firearms, and the Adam Sessler is the kind of opposition he faces, we’re in a lot of trouble.

We don’t need Adam Sesslers, we need Jon Stewarts

DS Homebrew – DS-Xtreme

engadget has a link to the DS-Xtreme, another new DS homebrew device. This one looks even sleeker than the ninjapass thing we looked at last month.

It looks to be a DS cart with an actual mini usb port on the back. Apparently, it requires no additional software, hardware or firmware, just plugs straight in and works immediately. It has its own cute little OS, and on the PC side, its XP plug and play, it just pops up like a removable disk, and you can drag and drop your DS games/apps onto it!

This sounds just too good to be true, especially since there’s no release date or price. But then, stranger things have happened.

Needless to say, i’ll be checking back here regularly!
