I don’t usually talk/write much on this blog, but I think its high time I did.

I get a lot of really useful recycling/reuse tips from a variety of sources on the net, the big ones being lifehacker, MAKE and treehugger. But every now and then I’ll venture into the unknown territory of our own governments attempts to address the problem, such as Power Of One (powerofone.ie) Sustainable Energy Ireland (sei.ie) or Race Against Waste (raceagainstwaste.ie). Both sites have admirable goals, but offer only the most obvious of advice, from using CFL light bulbs (something we’ve been told to do since the 90s) to turning down the thermostat by just 1 degree. In the case of RaceAgainstWaste.ie, I found this nugget of useful info on the ‘Reduce’ page:

It’s typical of the attitude our government and local government seems to have in this country – fake concern to keep the public happy. It seems like nobody who’s involved in raceagainstwaste.ie really gives a shit about the environment, they’re all just doing what the memo told them, ie put up a website which gives the public some tips on how to reduce household waste. No creative thinking is in effect. Just the government approved list of things we should all do. Not that they care whether you do them or not.
